Panangad Grama Panchayat is situated in the Balussery Block of Koyilandy Taluk in Kozhikode district. Falling within the limits of Puthur village, Panangad Grama Panchayat covers an area of 46.96 square kilometers. The boundaries of this panchayat are Kottoor and Koorachundu panchayats to the north; Thamarassery and Unnikulam panchayats to the east; Balussery, Nanmanda, and Unnikulam panchayats to the south; and Nanmanda, Balussery, and Kottoor panchayats to the west. Panangad is a village comprising hills, hillocks, valleys, paddy fields, and small plains. The northern part features a stretch of hill ranges from east to west. Steeply sloped hills such as Kappikkunnu, Varora, Theradi, Thorad, Manicheri, Punnathara, Kottakkuunu, Kilikudukki, Varimala, and Periya are located entirely in this area. Vayalada, Kannivayal, and Thalayad are plains nestled among these hills. In the southern valley region, the landscape mainly consists of open plots, paddy fields, and rivers. The Manjakkadavu river—also known as the Manjappuzha or Kottanadappuzha—originates as small streams and flows a considerable distance before taking full form as a river upon reaching Panangad Panchayat. Additionally, streams originating from areas adjacent to the Periya Pass in the east converge at Cheedikuzhi, flow southward through the eastern part of the panchayat, and join the Poonoor river. Panangad Panchayat came into existence on January 1, 1962. Following a year of administration under an Executive Officer, the first governing body took charge on January 1, 1963. Ukkappakurup was the first president of this panchayat (formerly Balussery). This panchayat is a fully agrarian village. The geography of the panchayat consists of major hills like Kottakkuunumala, Vazhoramala, Karoramala, Kappikkunnu, Kanthaladmala, Manicheri-Kottakkuunu, Vayalida, Cheriyamanicheri, and Peryamala; smaller hills like Neradimala, Poovambayimala, and Chekidambarakkunnu; the surrounding slopes and valleys; and paddy fields on both sides of the Manjakkadavu river and its tributaries.
